A historic home steeped in pattern and pigment.

San Francisco, CA

When our clients moved into their historic home, they wanted a formality that honored the home’s pedigree. Built in 1905, the bones were classic. Original woodwork remains, and sophisticated detailing creates a timeless backdrop: think architectural features such as coffered ceilings and custom moldings, crystal light fixtures that lend sparkling elegance, gilded mirrors, marble surfaces, and a staircase that goes on for days. From the lacquered blue kitchen to the living room enveloped in peacock blue and botanicals, to the blue-and-white dining room, teal bathroom, a handsome olive green study, and sunny yellow bedrooms, there is a color and pattern intensity throughout that still shows restraint. Meantime, fashion-forward materials like velvet, mohair, alpaca and bouillon fringe soften the seriousness and keep the formal furnishings comfortable and inviting.

A formidable curation of oil paintings, blue-and-white ceramics, and chinoiserie joins objects acquired by the couple along their travels for an interior that feels collected, thoughtfully composed, and to be continued.
